Scripture: Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Testify:
I am learning to be very mindful of the words I speak. At times this can be challenging, especially when I am upset and react before thinking. In those moments, I quickly ask God for forgiveness and pray that He continues to help me grow in patience and self-control. I have no problem in speaking up when I’m angry or upset. I can find all the words necessary to tell you where to go and how to get there. But in all honesty, I have a problem with speaking up when it comes to other things. I find myself losing confidence and I second guess myself the entire time. I ask myself, where are your words now?
Edify:
This scripture reminds us to speak life and positivity into others. Words carry great power — they can build or they can destroy. God calls us to use our words to encourage, uplift, and strengthen rather than to wound or tear down. When we guard our speech, we allow God’s grace to flow through us, and others are able to experience His love through the words we share. We are all guilty of speaking when we shouldn’t be. This scripture reminds us to let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouth. We are the best at this kind of talk. This scripture admonishes us to stop, think and ask, is what I’m about to say helpful? Will it build someone up? Will it help supply or provide a need for someone? Is it beneficial? If not, don’t Speak Up.
Apply:
It is important to use our voices, but even more important to ensure that what we say is uplifting and beneficial to those who hear it. By pausing and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our words, we can make sure our speech honors God and blesses others.
